Problems in the jaw joint often occur in people who are under increased pressure, as they will often deal with this stress and tension subconsciously by clenching and grinding their teeth while asleep. Often unaware of the cause, people suffering TMD, may experience muscular pain in their jaws, temples, back of their necks and shoulders which may lead to headaches; as well as ringing in the ears and earache amongst other commonly found symptoms. Dentists will often detect other signs of clenching and grinding that patients are not always aware of until shown with our intra-oral camera.
Grinding and clenching your teeth for any prolonged period can be very harmful to your teeth and lead to damage to your jaw joint, as well as fractured teeth and restorations. Apart from stress, TMD has been associated with changes in bite, poor posture and sleep positions. Our dentists have a particular interest in this area, and have successfully treated hundreds of patients with this condition.
