As dentists, we spend much of our lives focussing on an area smaller than a tennis ball. Tomorrow evening, Tuesday 28th
August, 18.00hrs, everyone will be reminded that we are just tiny objects in a much larger universe. All in South East Queensland will have box seats
for a spectacular lunar show in the eastern sky. The total eclipse of the moon is set to turn the moon from its normal
greyish-white colour to a coppery hue.
With a prime time schedule, in Brisbane the eclipse will begin at 17.52 with the most spectacular views from 18.51 through to 21.23.
The moon will not completely clear the Earth's shadow until 23.22.
Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth is positioned between the Sun and the moon, such that the Earth casts its shadow over the
moon. The red tinge of the moon is due to the sunlight passing through Earth's atmosphere, prior to reaching the moon's surface.
The scattering of the light through particles in the atmosphere removes the blue spectrum and produces the red colouring we will
enjoy. Lunar eclipses occur about twice a year, however we don't often have the opportunity to watch the show from start to finish,
and won't see another like this until 2010!
