Minimum Intervention Dentistry: from Prevention to Restoration

Professor Hien Ngo (Specialist in Oral Medicine and Pathology)

Is your dentist still using decade old technology and techniques? If your having mercury-based amalgam fillings placed in your mouth, you may be losing more tooth structure than necessary.

Professor Ngo presented a lecture on the cutting edge of treatment options for restorative dentistry, and minimum intervention dentistry. This may involve non-surgical treatment methods such as remineralising of early decay, and the use of modern materials to ensure the smallest possible change to your own teeth.

The most important service we provide is that of preventative care. Your own teeth are nearly always the best component of your mouth, and we can provide every solution to maintain them. This includes hygiene appointments for professional cleaning and tooth strengthening treatments, for most on a six-monthly basis; fissure sealants to prevent decay in the most commonly decayed parts of your teeth, mouthguards, and instruction for all patients on how best to look after your teeth at home.

Our dentists are also able to provide the best treatment solutions for bad breath or "halitosis". Call Kathryn now on 3354 1077 to arrange a consultation and take the step to avoid this embarrassing problem.

Pharmacological Management of Caries

Cross-section of tooth mineral
Dr Geoff Knight

This lecture looked at the relationship between teeth and oral bacteria, and the thin layer of minerals that lies between. It particularly looked at the mechanisms to pharmacologically stop decay before extensive treatment was necessary.

Immediate vs Delayed Implant Placement

Dr Jamil Alayan (Specialist Periodontist)

Dental implants have become the gold standard for tooth replacement. Providing a long-term treatment option, which replicates the function of your own tooth most closely. This session discussed the when, why and how of both immediate and delayed placement protocols. Also common questions about immediate implant placement were addressed including: Do immediate implants preserve alveolar bone after tooth extraction? Do they provide improved patient outcomes when compared to traditional protocols?
To discuss which method is best for you, make an appointment to speak to our helpful staff about how implants can be used to regain lost function.

Implants placed in fresh extraction sockets

Beautiful smiles in Brisbane
Professor Jan Lindhe (Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and Periodontics)

The tooth is connected to the jaw through an attachment apparatus comprised of the root cementum, the periodontal ligament, and the bundle bone. These tissues are maintained through use of your tooth, and the distribution of the force that stimulates the remodelling of its hard and soft tissue components. Following the loss of a tooth, the attatchment apparatus disappears and the bone surround the tooth socket undergoes resorption.

This lecture looked at the affect of implant placement on maintenance of your jaw bone, ensuring the ideal treatment outcomes during tooth replacement.

Immediate tooth replacement in the aesthetic zone

Dr Joseph Kan (Specialist Prosthodontist)

Achieving anterior implant aesthetics is a challenging and demanding procedure. To create an implant that emulates nature is a fusion of science and art. Understanding the biologic and physiologic limitations of the soft and hard tissue will facilitate predictability in simple to complex aesthetic situations. This presentation focussed on the diagnosis and treatment planning, surgical and prosthetic management of soft and hard tissue for anterior implant papilla aesthetics.

Rotary Endodontics

Dr Glen Weston (Specialist Endodontist)

Root canal therapy (RCT) has been available for many decades and has allowed many of our patients to retain their teeth for a lifetime. Previously the teeth would have just been removed, leading to a lifetime of additional expensive problems. With advances in technology, root canal therapy has become very comfortable for our patients, and means that a tooth that has been extensively infected can be retained for life pain-free with the right restoration. At Jorgensen Mutzelburg Dental, we use the latest in rotary endodontic technology to ensure the best result for our patients as well as minimising any discomfort. For our patients, the Root canal therapy treatment is no more remarkable than having a normal filling. Many of our patients take the opportunity to watch a movie or have a snooze.

Guided Bone Regeneration

Professor Nikos Donos (Professor in Periodontics)

A prerequisite for the successful placement of Dental implants in an ideal position is the presence of a minimum amount of bone height and width at the recipient site that will provide a functional and cosmetic implant borne restoration for the patient. In cases where the amount of bone is not adequate for implant placement, different ridge augmentation procedures have been suggested.
If you have any questions, please call us or just drop in to arrange a convenient time for further discussion.

Microgaps, socket healing and their impact on peri-implant bone maintenance

Assoc Professor Dietmar Weng (Specialist in Dental Implants and Periodontics)

The shape and amount of peri-implant soft tissues (gingiva or gum) are highly dependent on the underlying bone tissue because soft tissue aesthetics around implants is difficult to create, predict, or maintain without bony support. Therefore prosthetic-driven and aesthetically oriented implant dentistry aims at bone maintenance. In order to preserve this bone on a long-term basis, it is favourable not to lose bone after implant insertion. When combined with good oral hygiene, this will also ensure aesthetic long-term success.

Immediate implant placement, temporisation and/or loading: Respecting the boundaries

Professor Michael Norton (Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dental Implantology)

This presentation considered how implant cases can be completed in a safe and clinically predictable manner utilising the latest concepts in implant design. The presentation also considered the types of complications that can arise following implant placement. At Jorgensen Mutzelburg, our dentists have a special interest in dental implants and will work with you and Brisbane's expert periodontists, oral surgeons and anaesthetists to treat any existing condition. Treatments are available for all conditions and the best option for you will be discussed at your consultation.

Post extraction protocols: bone preservation

Professor Jan Lindhe (Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and Periodontics)
Missing Teeth? Losing bone
Following tooth extraction, the edentulous site of the ridge will undergo change and its volume will become markedly reduced. Attempts have been made to counteract such post extraction ridge resorption by the use of various bone substitutes that following tooth removal, were placed in the blood clot of the fresh extraction socket. The outcomes of various socket preservation procedures were discussed.

Post extraction tissue preservation: Simplified augmentation protocols

Assoc Professor Dietmar Weng (Specialist in Dental Implantology and Periodontics)

Beautiful adult smiles Management of the extraction socket has become a key issue in recent years. Australia's specialist Dr John Giblin introduced the phrase "Planned extraction therapy" to ensure dentists were presenting the possible treatment outcomes to patients. The knowledge of human physiology and biology ensures our patients receive the best treatment available now and in the future. Using the concepts presented in this lecture, we aim to achieve long term stability and aesthetic success without excessive augmentation procedures.

If you need to have a tooth removed, always consider the future, and how you may like to replace your teeth and continue enjoying your lifestyle. A simple procedure completed at the time of tooth removal can make a lifetime of difference when it comes time to replace your missing tooth. Call us for a consultation to discuss how best to maintain your lifestyle.

Implant placement in the anterior maxilla

Dr Ueli Grunder (Specialist in Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry)

Placement of implants has become a routine procedure, and results can be achieved with high predictability when treatment is completed by a highly-trained dentist, and post-operative protocols are followed by patients. This lecture looks at the range of treatment options available today to replace missing teeth in the anterior region.

Surgical Complications

Professor Michael Norton (Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dental Implantology)

This lecture looks at the management of surgical complications in dentistry.

Predictable implant papilla aesthetics: Science, art and limitations

Professor Joseph Kan (Specialist in Prosthodontics)

Creating and maintaining anterior implant papilla aesthetics is a challenging and demanding procedure. This presentation focussed on papilla management around single and multiple adjacent implants in the aesthetic zone. Papilla regenerations procedures were discussed.

Surgical considerations: Immediate vs delayed implant placement, bone augmentation, soft tissue grafting

Dr Ueli Grunder (Specialist in Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry)

In implant dentistry there are several treatment modalities for each individual situation and this lecture looks at how to make the difficult decision on which method to choose in order to achieve the best possible result for our patients.

In particular, looking at Damon brackets, Invisalign orthodontics, wisdom teeth removal, orthodontic retainers, extraction vs non-extraction therapy, early intervention orthodontics, and orthodontic trainers.

Advancements in Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry - Vital Elements for Clinical Success

Dr Raymond Bertolloti (Professor of Biomaterial Science)

A course presented by one of the eminent scientists and clinicians on materials science in dentistry. The series of seminars focussed on the principles of restoration with aesthetic dental materials.
